This year's winner of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology engineering contest: roof tiles that turn black or white depending on the weather, to reflect heat or absorb it. A team of graduates earned the top prize with a heat-activated, color-changing roofing material called Thermeleon. The protoype uses phase-change polymer gel-filled tiles, so that the tiles turn white on hot days to reflect heat and black on cold days to absorb it.
