IBM is working on a new automatic translation tool it hopes will be fast and accurate enough to allow instant-messaging between people who speak different languages. In creating n.Fluent, IBM is seeking the input of its 400,000 employees in 170 countries to make human improvements to the computer's attempts at translation, which otherwise do not respond easily to the unpredictability of language. While IBM says n.Fluent will initially be used in-house, it hopes to create a product for broader business use.
