The Department of Energy is prioritizing algae-based biofuels and intends to speed up their deployment more than cellulosic ethanol, said agency official Valerie Reed at a summit in Honolulu. The DOE made a call for such initiatives through the economic-stimulus law, which allocated $35 million for advanced biofuels and $50 million for algal biofuels, she added. The agency is also expected next month to release for publication the National Algal Biofuels Technology Roadmap, which will focus on the fuel's commercialization.
