The South Texas Blood and Tissue Center decided to use social-media channels on the Internet, such as MySpace, Twitter and Facebook, as its marketing strategy to attract more teens to donate blood. Use of MySpace allowed for the collection of 3,000 blood units from 16-year-olds alone. The blood bank is among a growing number of nonprofits using social media to boost volunteerism and community loyalty.
