American Airlines has promised not to compete on Asian routes if Japan Air Lines agrees to remain in the Oneworld alliance. "We don't intend to try to connect traffic in an immunized way with any other partner in this part of the world," said American CEO Gerard Arpey, noting that Delta Air Lines, with an established hub in Tokyo, could siphon off JAL passengers if it teamed up with JAL. Following a Wednesday meeting with the Japanese transport minister, Arpey also hinted that American and its partners could increase their financial commitment to JAL.
