Over the next three decades, California will spend $1.1 billion to improve sidewalks and curb ramps for disabled individuals. The spending plan is part of a settlement agreement reached after two disabled individuals and two advocacy groups filed a lawsuit against the state. A federal judge will hold a hearing in April to consider the final approval of the agreement. The lawsuit, filed in 2006, argued that sidewalks along California highways are often uneven, in disrepair or obstructed.
