The number of Tennessee teachers who earned National Board Certification increased 40% this year over last, but the state still lags behind neighboring states in the number of teachers who have the national certification. Officials attribute the low numbers to the minimal financial support the state offers for teachers interested in certification. However, one teacher said extra pay was not the reason she chose to seek National Board Certification. "It's put me on a journey to make me become a better educator," she said.
