As colleges and universities struggle with budget cuts, faculty positions in foreign languages are projected to decline by 39% from 2009 to 2010, according to a Modern Language Association tracking of job listings. The organization reported that 48.5% of foreign language positions advertised in October 2009 were tenure-track positions, down from as high as 65% in the years since 1997. Spanish language positions made up 35.5% of foreign language job listings, with French at 16% and Chinese at 9.5%, the MLA said.
