Justice Department officials have filed briefs in support of lawsuits against New York, Connecticut and Virginia, where plaintiffs are asking the states to provide people with disabilities community housing instead of larger residential facilities. The friend-of-the-court briefs cite a 1999 Supreme Court case that said, when possible, people with disabilities should live in a community-based setting. President Barack Obama has pledged his support in enforcing the legal precedent.
