The chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board is chiding the FAA for failing to implement runway safety measures nearly 10 years after they were first proposed. "How do safety improvements end up taking 10 years to deliver?" asked Deborah Hersman during an address to the FAA International Runway Safety Summit. "Every day they are delayed could be the day" a tragedy occurs, she said. An FAA official responded that the agency is "sensitive to the time constraints" and is "working fast" on initiatives such as upgraded runway status lights.
