Efforts by educators to meet the needs of an Arizona student who has autism have garnered praise from the student's mother. While a recent state audit showed that 29% of the district's special-education teachers are not designated as highly qualified, Jill Mitchell said her son's district has taken steps including hiring and training a paraprofessional to provide applied behavioral therapy for her son, as well as implementing a regular "lunch bunch" program to help him improve social skills and form friendships with classmates.
