Real estate professionals report something of a pet shop boom in New York. Even as consumers scale back luxury purchases for themselves, they can't seem to bring themselves to get tough with their pets, and spending in the sector has held up. At the same time, the recession has left landlords with a lot of empty retail spaces, and they're cutting rents to attract tenants. When it comes to taking advantage of the opportunities, pet-supply retailers are high in the pecking order.
