The lively capital raising by REITs in the public markets did a lot to ease the threat of maturing loans in 2009 and beyond. Equity offerings and unsecured debt brought in a total of $28.3 billion to strengthen REITs' balance sheets, according to this report. That total included 59 stock offerings and 30 unsecured debt offerings. Most of the proceeds were used to reduce debt.
