One agency that helps school districts identify and support homeless students in the Pittsburgh area say there has been a 64% increase in the number of homeless students since the 2007-08 academic school year. The rise is likely due to the economic recession as well as the stepped-up efforts of school districts to identify such students, officials say. State efforts to support the students include a new Homeless Education Task Force/Advisory Board to guide schools in helping homeless students using a "holistic, integrated approach."
