A German test pilot flew the Solar Impulse, an aircraft propelled by four solar engines, a distance of 1,150 feet at an altitude of about three feet above a runway near Zurich. Swiss aeronautical engineer Bertrand Piccard, who designed the single-seat plane, hopes to embark on a trip around the world in the aircraft. "I am elated that we managed this a week before the Copenhagen climate summit," said Piccard. "That sends a strong message that there can be sustainable powered flight with no pollution."
