Starwood is putting a new energy-management system to test at its Element Hotel in Lexington, Mass., which serves as a green lab for the chain. The system is designed to reduce heating and air-conditioning usage with motion and heat-sensitive sensors that detect when guests leave their rooms or fall asleep inside. Starwood says the system has so far reduced heating and air-conditioning use by 47%, resulting in savings of about $6,000 over two months.
