Several states are taking steps to limit their use of road salt this winter in order to avoid harm to the environment caused by salt runoff. Maryland, for example, is testing a mixture made from sugar beets that is mixed with rock salt and water and then sprayed on the highways to melt ice. Other states are using a mixture of rock salt and water that leaves less salt behind after the ice melts.
