In its second major acquisition around its server and tools business since developing the Windows Azure cloud offering and forming a new server and cloud division, Microsoft announced it has bought IT process automation vendor Opalis. The new technology, which will be melded into Microsoft's System Center portfolio, is designed to help enterprises manage automated and scalable virtual environments. Terms were not disclosed.
Like most everything else in the tech industry, merger and acquisitions slowed in the past few years, with U.S.-based activity hitting $2.3 billion in the second quarter of this year compared with $13.8 billion in the same period last year. But the worst might be over, according to a report by PricewaterhouseCoopers, given a comeback late this year of billion-dollar deals and a wave of startups set on taking the IPO leap in 2010.
A Goldman Sachs tech spend report indicates growth in 2010, driven primarily by enterprises needing to refresh hardware, and upgrade desktop and server systems to Windows 7. The research report predicts a 4% jump next year in overall tech spend, with 32% polled intent on moving to Windows 7 and the majority of enterprises taking the same step in the next two years.
