Mobile-software developers shouldn't be banking on application revenue going forward as users are less inclined to pay for apps, according to research firm Gartner. That means stepping up advertising programs, as one quarter of application-store revenue is expected to be generated from advertising in 2013, a big jump given it was 5% in 2009. In the same time frame, software downloads that are available free of charge are expected to grow from 79% to 87%.
