Many costly and emotionally taxing lawsuits between school districts and parents of students in special education could be better resolved through the use of mediation, writes Rutgers University professor of special education Stanley J. Vitello. In this opinion article, Vitello argues that lawyers should encourage parents not to rush into litigation before considering alternative conflict-resolution services as a way to avoid damage to the important parent-school relationship, which the student must continue to endure after the dust settles.
