Cisco Systems has successfully completed a tested deployment of satellite-based, radiation-proof routers in a Department of Defense-funded project designed to beam IP-based traffic in space just as packet technology does on Earth. Cisco and Intelsat have linked up to support the DoD's Internet Routing in Space project to deliver voice, data and video information between satellites. The equipment vendor said it hoped to begin testing the router's commercial potential after it completed a three-month IRIS trial in April.
