Global warming may allow for an undersea cable in the Arctic for global telecommunications. Climate change has melted summer sea ice in the Arctic that had previously blocked construction of an underwater fiber optic cable between Tokyo and London. However, the ArcticLink project still faces other impediments, such as an estimated construction cost of $1.2 billion for the cable through the Northwest Passage.
