A 17-year-old Jewish boy caused a US Airways Express jet to make an emergency landing on Thursday after a flight attendant saw him strapping something around his head and wrist. Unfamiliar with the tefillin used by observant Jews during morning prayers, the flight attendant notified the captain, who diverted the flight to Philadelphia shortly after takeoff from New York LaGuardia. A spokesman for the Philadelphia police defended the crew's action.
