Nearly one-fourth of all workers' compensation prescription drug expenses went to the use of narcotics, and, as claims mature, its share of drug costs also rise, according to a study by the National Council on Compensation Insurance. "The medical community seems divided over the suitability of narcotics to treat other forms of pain, such as those resulting from the majority of workers' compensation injuries," the report added.
