The Atlantic side of the Panama Canal will need a new road for vehicular traffic once work begins on new locks as part of a $5.2 billion expansion project. The Panama Canal Authority hopes to award a feasibility contract for alternatives, possibly a bridge or tunnel, for a permanent vehicular crossing at the Gatun Locks near Colon over the next few weeks. The appointed contractor will have seven months to submit a proposal.
