The NIH created or saved "high-paying, quality jobs" in the first year of using $10 billion in stimulus funding, and it plans to continue collaborating with health care companies to boost medical research, said Francis Collins, the agency's director. The NIH agenda includes an experimental treatment for schistosomiasis, a disease caused by snail parasites, and a cheaper technique for sequencing the human genome, Collins said.
