As Twitter evolves, some power users are trying to popularize a standardized machine-readable syntax -- think hashtags on steroids -- to allow better search and sorting. That's all well and good, writes hashtag inventor Chris Messina, but there's a trade-off between standardization and utility. Far better, he argues, to allow Twitter standards to emerge organically from the way people actually talk to one another.
