Italian researchers recommended in a Lancet Oncology report that DNA tests for the human papillomavirus replace Pap smears as the primary screen for cervical cancer in women over 35. The study found that the HPV test prevented more cases of cervical cancer than the conventional Pap smear in older women but led to overdiagnosis of a certain type of cervical lesion in younger women.
