Arizona State University's teacher-training program will focus more on subject matter and less on how to teach beginning in the fall of 2011. "We're talking about having a course in probability and statistics that elementary teachers will have to have because that's what they use in elementary school," said Mari Koerner, dean of ASU's College of Teacher Education and Leadership. "So you can't be a teacher if you're math-phobic." University officials say other changes to educator training will be based on aspects of the Teach for America program.
