A study found the birth weight of full-term babies in the U.S. declined almost 2 ounces between 1990 and 2005, to an average of 7 pounds, 7.54 ounces. Researchers said they were not sure what caused the decline but cautioned that health care providers should monitor whether the proportion of the smallest babies, who often have health problems and require extra resources, increases over time.
