Wisconsin officials have rejected one district's plan to use federal stimulus money to construct seclusion and segregation areas for students with disabilities in some schools. They are advising other districts not to do so, either. Administrators say the areas were meant to provide space for educators to work with students in a nondisruptive setting or to provide a quiet place for agitated students to calm down. But disability advocates are critical of such practices, and federal legislation is being considered to regulate the use of seclusion.
