President Barack Obama hopes to eliminate the 2014 deadline under No Child Left Behind that requires all students to be proficient or advanced in math and reading, according to sources. Obama's proposed overhaul of the federal law maintains a commitment to closing achievement gaps and improving teacher quality. It does, however, include changes in the way schools are assessed and financed, and it could include the removal of the adequate yearly progress rating system based on student test scores.
