Major airlines have threatened to withdraw their support for a massive expansion at Chicago O'Hare International Airport after city aviation officials proposed hiking rental rates as much as 17% and landing fees by 38%. Executives from American Airlines and United Airlines have notified Aviation Commissioner Rosemarie Andolino that if Chicago "intentionally and unnecessarily increase[s] the airlines' costs, we cannot consider any projects that will only exacerbate the situation." The dispute could threaten the second phase of O'Hare's $15 billion modernization program, which includes a new terminal and additional runways.
