Butalco announced it will begin this summer to produce cellulosic ethanol from agricultural waste at a pilot-scale facility in southern Germany. The company said its microbial catalysts can ferment both glucose and pentoses in plant waste, unlike conventional methods that can digest only glucose. Along with Danisco and Novozymes' enzyme products, "Butalco's yeast technology will enable cellulosic ethanol as a competitive alternative to gasoline," said Eckhard Boles, the company's co-founder.
