California officials have proposed closing the 82-year-old Lanterman Developmental Center, one of the state's last large facilities for people with severe developmental disabilities. The closure plans have residents' families and other advocates concerned about the care the residents will receive at home or in smaller, neighborhood facilities, but state officials say they have gone to great lengths to maintain adequate services for former residents of other large facilities that have been closed.
