The pilots union at Southwest Airlines wasted no time voicing its opposition to various proposals in Washington for monitoring cockpit voice recorders. Both the NTSB and Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., have urged reviews of the recordings as a way to increase safety. But the head of the Southwest Airlines Pilots' Association said such monitoring would have "the exact opposite effect" and "would surely backfire" because pilots will be less willing to participate in voluntary reporting programs.
