The corn-based ethanol industry received a major boost after the Environmental Protection Agency ruled that the biofuel reduces greenhouse-gas emissions compared with gasoline after examining the latest science on crop productivity, land use and ethanol-production technology, according to Forbes energy, technology and science writer Jonathan Fahey. The finding made its way into the renewable fuels mandate, which will allow the U.S. ethanol industry to produce at least 2 billion gallons more of the biofuel, Fahey writes.
