Five states -- Malaysia, Maldives, Qatar, Thailand, and Iran -- are submitting their names as candidates for the Asian bloc of the UN Human Rights Council, which has four open seats this year. The secret vote by the UN General Assembly, which is currently run by a former foreign minister of Libya, could conceivably elect Iran to the HRC, an outcome that would send a debilitating message to dissidents rallying for transparency and freedom in Iran.
