Male students need male teachers in the classroom to serve as role models, according to Cynthia P. Cooke, the principal of Camperdown High School in Jamaica. Cooke writes in this column that her own school had success in teaching male students -- partly because of her focus on maintaining a balance of male and female teachers. Cooke also writes that to improve achievement among male students, boys must be given more freedom to play and should be praised for their success.
