The federal government should increase funding for school districts to provide healthy meals for students when it considers updates to the Child Nutrition Act, according to Florida National Board Certified Teacher Richard Villadoniga. Villadoniga, a middle-school teacher, is the leader of Slow Food First Coast, a nonprofit organization that advocates for healthy food. He writes in this column that there also should be more regulations over the type of food that can be sold in school cafeterias in an effort to ban junk food and curb childhood obesity.
