The latest extreme-dieting fad has a sting in its tail: It involves stitching a small piece of polyethylene mesh to the dieter's tongue, making it painful to eat anything other than a low-calorie, liquid diet. Doctors remain skeptical, though, about whether the diet will produce long-term results. "Almost certainly the weight will return when you go back to the lifestyle you had before you had the medieval torture device installed in your mouth," says Dr. Yoni Freedhoff, an obesity specialist.
