By including Asperger's syndrome among the disorders on the autism spectrum, the American Psychiatric Association is helping to remove the stigma surrounding autism and rejecting the notion that Asperger's is synonymous with "high-functioning," author Roy Richard Grinker writes. Grinker, who is an anthropology professor at George Washington University and has a daughter with autism, welcomes the APA's proposal to remove this distinction, which he argues isn't scientifically valid.
