The Los Angeles Unified School District is recalling teachers it has loaned out for years to out-of-district schools, saying it can no longer afford to pay the teachers' retirement health care benefits -- about $14,400 per teacher per year. Students and staff at one nondistrict school are rallying to keep a popular history teacher who has been teaching there for nearly 25 years and says he would prefer to retire early than return to a city school.
