One Tennessee science teacher turned down her district's offer of $5,000 for new textbooks for her microbiology students, requesting permission to spend the money on high-tech microscopes instead. "I made the choice, and the course would not be the same without the microscopes," she said. "That, to me, was an easy trade. ... It's a richer experience, more so than if I assign them reading out of a textbook."
