More U.S. refineries, including those operated by oil majors, will shut down in 2010, Tesoro CEO Bruce Smith said. Since January of last year, three plants with a total throughput of 425,000 barrels per day have been closed. Smith said production cuts brought by weak margins have effectively reduced the country's refining capacity by almost 1.7 million barrels per day.
