Students better internalize science concepts when participating in hands-on activities -- rather than taking notes -- according to a workshop attended by 15 middle-school science teachers in Florida's Pasco district. Teachers learned that students are more likely to retain information through experiments and class discussion, rather than reading and memorization. "Science is teaching them how to figure out what is in the book. The key is to make connections," said Larry Chew, the associate professor of aerospace engineering who led the training.
