Candy retailers have been doing well in and around Las Vegas during the economic downturn as consumers turn to sweets as an affordable indulgence. Recently opened candy stores include IT'SUGAR in Town Square, Sugar Factory at The Mirage and Planet Hollywood, and Popcorn Girl in the northwest valley.
In an NPD Group survey, consumers said product mix is the top reason they choose one convenience store over another. Other reasons include employee friendliness, prices, store cleanliness and appearance, and hours of operation.
Organic foods are grown without pesticides, but that does not mean they contain more nutrients. Experts say choosing foods that are minimally processed is the best route, though studies indicate organic meat and dairy products contain more antioxidants.
Moonstruck Chocolate is trying a new concept with a counter inside a Fred Meyer supermarket. "We are looking at this as a piece of our future strategy," said Ron Brake, director of sales, noting that the company is moving cautiously after closing cafes.
Xan Confections is launching a line of gluten-free sweets in milk and dark-chocolate flavors, called BigMouth Chocolate Treats. The products are made with natural ingredients and have 25% less sugar than other BigMouth chocolates, said a company official.
