Algae is the biofuel source that will allow the airline industry to meet its targets for greenhouse-gas reduction, according to Jean Botti, chief technical officer of EADS, the parent company of Airbus. Second-generation, plant-based biofuels such as camelina and jatropha do not offer sufficient greenhouse-gas reductions to replace petroleum-based jet fuel, Botti added. "Third-generation biofuels are the Plan B to kerosene," he said.
