Researchers have discovered that skin cells from human amniotic fluid can form embryonic-like stem cell colonies faster and in more volume than cultured adult skin cells. Amniotic fluid skin cells can be safely collected from women who undergo amniocentesis at about 15 weeks into pregnancy, the researchers said. The cells show promise in becoming a major source of stem cells that can be used in research and future treatments.
