McDonald's could make an ideal staging ground for a push to make vegan meat substitutes more widely accepted, writes Nick Aster. The fast-food chain's patties -- "at once delicious and disturbing" -- aren't easily identifiable as beef to begin with, Aster writes, so most people probably wouldn't notice if their Big Mac were filled with flavored soy protein instead of meat. With the chain's marketing muscle behind it, vegan meat substitutes might finally break into the mainstream.
